Where Can Green Amethyst Be Found?
Amethyst is the birth gemstone of February. It is a semi-precious gemstone as popular today as it was prized in history, when it was only available for high ranking Religious leaders and members of Royalty to wear. As everyone who knows anything about gemstone knows, amethysts are purple gemstones, ranging from the most rich and vibrant color to the palest lilac purple. So it may surprise you to know that some amethysts are actually green. Amethyst gemstones are members of the quartz family. They are made up of silicon dioxide, the main constituent of sand. Like many gemstones, small impurities can become trapped inside the forming crystal during development of the crystal. In general these impurities are responsible for imparting the color of the crystal, but sometimes they lie dormant until exposed to intense heat. And this is the case of green amethyst.
Also known as praisiolite or vermaine, green amethyst can be found naturally near volcanic mining areas in Brazil. Sadly this beautiful gemstone is very rare. It can, however, be produced in the laboratory by heat treatment of amethyst crystals containing specific iron compound impurities. These compounds react to the heat by turning a pale to mid green color. So Green Amethyst could actually be called, greened amethyst! Heat treatment of purple amethysts to form green one is a common practise which does not make gemstones any less genuine. Treated green amethysts are still natural genuine amethysts.
Heat treatment is frequently use in the gemological industry and does not impinge on the value of the resultant gemstone. In fact close to 99% of the most popular gemstones are treated to enhance them in some way. All of the commonly used permanent treatments, such as heat treatment, are globally accepted. In some cases, like for tanzanite, heat treatment is almost always applied because it brings out the vibrant colors for which this gemstone is known. Without heat treatment, gem quality tanzanite simply would not exist.
Other permanent treatment techniques, notable irradiation, have been used to produce green gemstones from clear quartz gemstones. However, quartz is cheaper than amethyst and so the resultant green gemstones are called green quartz. The term green amethyst is reserved for gemstones produced by heat treating amethyst only.
Green amethyst is a beautiful gemstone which is also believed to have a wide range of healing powers including clearing blocked chakras, cleansing toxins and digestion by regulating stomach acids and allowing the body to utilise nutrients efficiently.
